Preview: Manchester United vs Southampton

One of the matches of the 21st round of the English Premier League will be played on Thursday at the “Old Trafford” arena, where Manchester United will host Southampton.

Match Preview

The “Red Devils” finished last year with a series of three consecutive losses, with the team failing to score in all of them. Under the guidance of Ruben Amorim, the team lost to Bournemouth (0-3), Wolverhampton, and Newcastle (both matches ended 0-2). However, the new year brought a ray of hope: away, United managed to secure a draw in a dramatic clash with Liverpool (2-2), thus ending their losing streak.

Nevertheless, the crisis tendencies persist: the team is now without a win in four consecutive Premier League matches for the first time since April 2024. Currently, the “Red Devils” sit in 13th place in the standings, only seven points ahead of the relegation zone. In their last seven Premier League matches, they have recorded just one win, adding five losses and one draw — an alarming signal for a club of this level. On the other hand, United recently triumphed over Arsenal in the FA Cup, winning in a penalty shootout.

Ivan Juric’s team was once again humiliated on the pitch — the latest defeat was a heavy 0-5 loss to Brentford, which became their fourth heavy defeat of the season. This marked their third consecutive loss in the Premier League, and their winless streak has stretched to ten matches, with just two draws and eight losses.

Particularly concerning is the team’s goal-scoring performance: in their last six league matches, they have scored only one goal. As a result, they remain at the bottom of the standings, trailing 17th place by ten points. Their away form is also troubling, with the club suffering 13 losses in their last 17 away Premier League matches, adding four draws. On the weekend, Southampton secured a 3x-0 win over Swansea in the FA Cup.

Head-to-Head

  • In the first round, Manchester United won 3-0 at Southampton’s ground.
  • In the previous four matches, no more than two goals were scored.
