Preview: PSG vs Montpellier

Today, August 23, PSG will host Montpellier in the second round of Ligue 1. The match kicks off at 20:45 CET.

PSG

PSG are the reigning champions of France. As expected, Luis Enrique’s side secured their 12th Ligue 1 title, finishing the season with 76 points, nine ahead of Monaco. PSG suffered only two defeats all season but were held to ten draws. Nonetheless, there was never any real threat to their dominance.

This summer, PSG lost their talisman and star player, Kylian Mbappé, who fulfilled his dream of joining Real Madrid on a free transfer. However, PSG bolstered their squad with some exciting signings. Rennes’ super-talent Désiré Doué joined the ranks, along with center-back Willian Pacho from Eintracht Frankfurt. The marquee signing was João Neves, the central midfielder from Benfica, who was acquired for €60 million.

In their season opener, PSG secured a convincing 4-1 away win against Le Havre. New signing João Neves contributed with two assists, while Bradley Barcola, Lee Kang-In, Ousmane Dembélé, and Randal Kolo Muani found the back of the net.

Montpellier

Montpellier are a mid-table team in Ligue 1. Last season, it initially appeared that “The Palladins” would be battling relegation, but a strong second half saw them stabilize and finish 12th, 12 points clear of the drop zone. Given their resources, this was a commendable achievement, and it was no surprise that head coach Michel Der Zakarian retained his position.

Montpellier had a quiet summer in the transfer market. The club did not sell any of its key players, nor did it make any significant signings.

In the first round of Ligue 1, Montpellier played out a 1-1 draw at home against Strasbourg. Der Zakarian’s side conceded first in the 58th minute but equalized nine minutes later through a Téji Savanier penalty to salvage a point.

Interesting Facts and Head-to-Head History
