Given their resources, this was a commendable achievement, and it was no surprise that head coach Michel Der Zakarian retained his position.
Montpellier had a quiet summer in the transfer market. The club did not sell any of its key players, nor did it make any significant signings.
In the first round of Ligue 1, Montpellier played out a 1-1 draw at home against Strasbourg. Der Zakarian’s side conceded first in the 58th minute but equalized nine minutes later through a Téji Savanier penalty to salvage a point.
