Liverpool: Manager search “accelerates,” and new center-back connected

On Wednesday, Liverpool officially announced the appointment of a new sporting director. This could mean changes to the manager search and summer acquisitions.

Richard Hughes was named Liverpool’s new sporting director on Wednesday, marking the next phase of the team’s extensive restructuring.

Although Hughes’ term as technical director at Bournemouth expires on June 1, it is understood that he and Michael Edwards will get an early advantage in the process of appointing a manager for Liverpool.

The club “knew a sporting director would be in position before they could consider a formal approach to the most coveted coaches,” according to Chris Bascombe of the Telegraph.

The front-runner is Xabi Alonso, but there are also two other contenders: Roberto De Zerbi of Brighton and Ruben Amorim of Sporting CP.

Unsurprisingly, Hughes’ “first pressing matter” is reportedly finding a replacement for Jurgen Klopp.
