‘Worst year of my life’: Cesc Fabregas to leave Monaco

After an injury-ravaged season, Cesc Fabregas will leave AS Monaco when the current campaign comes to a close.

Fabregas, who signed for the Ligue 1 side in 2019, has made 68 appearances for Monaco, scoring four and assisting nine.

This season, however, he has been limited to just six appearances in what Fabregas calls ‘the worst year’ of his career.

Asked if he would extend his contract with AS Monaco when it expires this summer, Fabregas said, “No, it’s certain that it’s finished between me and Monaco. My contract expires in June and I am looking to depart.

“My head needs a departure elsewhere.

“It’s been not only the worst year of my career but the worst year of my life because when I’m not happy in football, I can’t be happy in life. I have suffered a lot this year; it’s been difficult mentally.

“To be honest, I received a couple of phone calls in the last couple of weeks from former managers to see whether I was open to joining them as a coach.

“But this year has been so bad that I can’t end like this, not after having constructed this career. I want to continue playing.

“I am open to anything, I just want to enjoy myself. The place doesn’t really matter. I am going to find a new project and see where the future takes me.”

Joel Campbell, meanwhile, will bring down the curtain on his time with Club de Fútbol Monterrey when his loan expires. He will return to Leon where he still has a year left on his deal with the Mexican First Division side.

Campbell has scored four goals, with four assists, in 33 appearances for Club de Fútbol Monterrey, his tally only two assists short of the four gaols and six assists he provided during his 40 appearances for Arsenal.
